Streaming services: Spotify vs. Apple Music

Like most people nowadays, I listen to my music through a streaming platform of my choice. The most popular platforms are the competing Spotify and Apple Music. How do the two compare, and why did I choose Spotify over Apple Music?

Before I became a Spotify user, I was a longtime subscriber to Microsoft’s music streaming service formerly known as Groove Music, prior known as Xbox Music before it went under and partnered with Spotify in early 2017. Microsoft helped ensure a smooth transition between the two services, migrating my collection over to Spotify as opposed to having me manually adding thousands of songs and hundreds of albums. I will admit, I wasn’t entirely thrilled with the sudden change because I had been a longtime Groove user.

I quickly warmed up to Spotify within a week or two of using the service. The UI wasn’t what it was today, and the service still had the 10,000-song limit cap, but I enjoyed how the app also has the functionalities of a social media app, such as following friends and family on the platform and sharing songs and podcasts with them directly.

Another selling point for me is Spotify’s Canvas feature, which enables short looping visuals with a track if they are available. Some may find this feature to be an annoyance or a hinderance to their overall…
